Zartaj Gul Tearfully Apologizes for Involvement in May 9 Riots

Zartaj Gul, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), became emotional and cried while saying sorry for her supposed involvement in the May 9 riots. She was afraid of getting arrested by the police at the court. She spoke to reporters at the Peshawar High Court during a hearing for her request for a transit bail. The former climate change minister apologized for the riots that happened after PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9, 2023. During these riots, protesters damaged security installations.

Gul, who is from Punjab’s Dera Ghazi Khan, did not want to leave the court until her bail plea was approved. She was worried that the police might arrest her outside. More police, including six female officers, were deployed outside the court, and Ababeel Squad personnel patrolled the area.

Speaking to journalists, Gul said it felt like she was in a war instead of participating in elections because there were many police officers outside the court. She asked her supporters not to worry, assuring them that she stood firmly with her beliefs. She hoped the judiciary would give her justice.

Gul mentioned that her nomination papers were rejected by the election commission, and election commission staff were taken hostage in DG Khan. She stressed that she had not committed any crime and only wanted to exercise her right to represent DG Khan in the elections.

Gul urged lawyers, the PHC chief justice, and the bar to ensure justice and prevent her arrest. She also requested the legal community to support the rule of law.

Earlier, female police officers tried to arrest Gul at the PHC’s bar room, but members of the Insaf Lawyers Forum stopped them. The bar room was then locked after media persons and police were asked to leave.
