Scientists utilized novel technology to generate an unprecedented image showcasing both the accretion process and the jet of the Messier 87 black hole.

Dale Kocevski, a team member from Colby College in Maine, swiftly discovered two additional small black holes from the data. The first one, located in galaxy CEERS 2782, was easily discernible since there were no obstructions from dust impeding the view. NASA noted that the black hole found within CEERS 1019 shares similarities with the one situated at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, which possesses a mass 4.6 million times that of the sun.

“Examining this distant object through the telescope is akin to scrutinizing data from black holes found in galaxies near our own,” stated Rebecca Larson, an astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin who spearheaded the discovery. By employing the GMVA, ALMA, and GLT, researchers have observed a larger ring-like structure and a broader radiation emanating from the inner region of the black hole, indicating the presence of an outblowing wind. Consequently, researchers deduced that this black hole emerged a mere 1.1 billion years after the Big Bang.

One billion years after the cosmic event, the second black hole in galaxy CEERS 746 came into existence. This newly discovered black hole is also not as luminous as the massive behemoths detected previously. As depicted in the image below, it consists of three distinct luminous clumps. “We are unaccustomed to observing such intricate structures in images at these vast distances,” remarked Jeyhan Kartaltepe, an astrophysicist at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, who contributed to the research.
