Study Suggests Intermittent Fasting Could Lower the Risk of Mental Illness

New research from the University of California San Diego suggests that paying attention to when you eat might be just as important as watching what you eat to avoid Alzheimer’s disease. The study, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, indicates that intermittent fasting could lower the risk of brain disease.

In this study, scientists at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine limited the time when laboratory mice could eat to only six hours each day. The results showed that the mice with restricted feeding had better memory, were more active, and experienced fewer sleep disturbances compared to the mice that could eat anytime. Additionally, the mice with restricted eating had fewer harmful proteins in their brains, a common sign of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers believe that eating at specific times could help the body return to its natural balance and assist Alzheimer’s patients in managing sleep and routine confusion.

Dr. Paula Desplats, the senior author of the study, emphasized the importance of meal times and their impact on the body’s internal clock and brain function. While the researchers expected some improvement in pathology, they were surprised to see noticeable effects in reducing protein accumulation and inflammation, as well as improving memory.
