X-class flares represent the highest category of solar flare activity and are essentially explosions occurring on the Sun’s surface, ranging from minutes to hours in duration, as described by NASA, which refers to X-class flares as “the real juggernauts.”

An X-class flare is approximately ten times more powerful than an M-class flare and one hundred times stronger than a C-class flare. Solar flares arise when the strong magnetic fields in and around the Sun reconnect. In 2022, a geomagnetic storm triggered by a significant burst of radiation from the Sun disrupted 40 recently launched satellites belonging to Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
