What Is Ramadan?

Ramadan holds the position of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is revered as a holy month commemorating the time when Allah, through the angel Gabriel, unveiled the initial verses of the Qur’an to Muhammad, a caravan trader.

When Is Ramadan?

This year, Ramadan is anticipated to commence at sundown on Sunday, March 10, and conclude at sundown on Tuesday, April 9. The concluding evening of Ramadan marks the celebration known as Eid al-Fitr, signifying the conclusion of the traditional month-long fast with a festive feast.

The precise commencement and conclusion times of Ramadan hinge on the sighting of the first crescent Moon on the last night of the eighth month (Sha’ban). Specifically, Ramadan is declared to commence upon the initial sighting of the crescent Moon over Mecca, Saudi Arabia, or on a date predetermined through astronomical calculations. As a result, the start and end dates are not fixed and may vary by a day. The dates provided below are grounded in expected visibility, hence potential discrepancies with observations elsewhere.

Traditions of Ramadan

Commencing at puberty, all Muslims (except for certain exemptions such as illness, travel, pregnancy, elderly status, etc.) partake in the month-long, dawn-to-sunset fast, a distinctive aspect of Ramadan. Fasting is believed to purify the body, serving as a reminder of the hardships faced by the less fortunate.

Consumption of food and drink (including water) is prohibited from dawn to sunset, with the day’s abstention balanced by a pre-dawn meal called sehri and a nightly meal known as iftar. For iftar, it is customary for many to initiate the breaking of the fast by eating dates, following the example of Prophet Muhammad. The foods served during iftar may vary, but it is common to share food with a less privileged family during Ramadan.
