Punjab Government Fails to Provide New Textbooks, Students Forced to Use Old Ones

As the new academic session commences in Punjab, students across the province find themselves grappling with old and damaged textbooks instead of the eagerly anticipated new ones. Despite expectations for fresh learning materials, the provincial government has faltered in ensuring timely distribution, leaving over 15 million enrolled students in a predicament.

According to a recent report by a private news channel, the delay in printing new textbooks has led to students being issued outdated materials. With the demand for textbooks surpassing 50 million in Punjab, the shortfall has left many students without the necessary resources for their education.

The situation has been exacerbated as teachers report concerns about the challenges students face when studying from old and often torn books. Rana Liaqat Ali, the General Secretary, emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Programme Monitoring and Implementation Unit (PMIU) to guarantee basic facilities in schools, including the timely provision of textbooks.

Despite assurances, the printing of new textbooks may only be completed during the upcoming summer vacations, leaving students to endure further months with inadequate resources. The lack of interest among children in studying from outdated materials underscores the urgency for swift action to rectify the situation.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the continuity of issues within the PMIU, with officers remaining unchanged despite shifts in government leadership. This continuity has sparked questions about accountability and the efficacy of the current system in meeting the educational needs of Punjab’s youth.
