The word “Easter” is uncertain in origin. Some think it comes from Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring and fertility. Another idea is that it comes from the Latin phrase “in albis,” meaning “in dawn,” which became “rostrum” in Old High German.

There was a big debate in early Christianity about when to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. In Asia Minor, people celebrated it on the same day as the Jewish Passover, while in the West, it was celebrated on the first Sunday after the 14th day of Nisan. The Council of Nicaea in 325 decided that Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, which is around March 21. So, Easter can be on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.
