Asia Cup 2023 Schedule Out

The schedule for the 2023 Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, has been released, with the tournament scheduled to run from August 30 to September 17. The matches are outlined in the latest version of the draft schedule, although further changes are expected before the final version is announced by the ACC. Notably, the match in Multan will mark the return of the Asia Cup to Pakistan after a gap of 15 years, as they prepare to co-host the tournament with Sri Lanka based on a hybrid model.

Group A consists of Pakistan, India, and Nepal, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. The initial draft schedule, prepared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has already undergone multiple revisions due to the unique hybrid model being implemented for the six-nation tournament, as approved by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) recently.

The hybrid model was devised after the Board of Control for Cricket in India declined to send its team to Pakistan for the tournament. Under this model, Pakistan will host four matches across two venues, while Sri Lanka will host the remaining games.

Pakistan’s Group A rivals include India and Nepal, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan form Group B. The tournament will be held across four venues, with Multan hosting the opening match and the subsequent three matches in Pakistan taking place in Lahore. Following the group stage, the Super 4s will commence on September 6.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Four stage, and from there, the two leading teams will advance to the final. Sri Lanka will utilize Kandy for the three first-round matches and Colombo for the five Super 4 stage fixtures, including the September 17 final.

Asia Cup 2023 Fixtures Announced

The Asia Cup, which will be played in the 50-overs format this time, serves as a preparation run for five of the six teams (excluding Nepal) for the ODI World Cup beginning on October 5 in India. The first Pakistan-India clash is scheduled on September 2 in Kandy, and if both teams progress to the Super 4s, their second encounter will occur in Colombo on September 10.

Initially, as per the original model prepared by the PCB, Pakistan was meant to host all four matches in just one city. In the tournament, Pakistan and India are seeded as A1 and A2, respectively, in Group A, while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are seeded as B1 and B2, respectively, in Group B, with Afghanistan as the third side in the latter group.
